Filmová filharmonie kicks off the season with a SCI-FI concert

Music is an essential part of our hobby – loving everything sci-fi, fantasy, or horror. Especially the "big" orchestral kind. You don't get to hear it live every day. It's an experience. A large group of professionals playing polished instruments, a passionate conductor, and ideally, a representative venue with great acoustics, like Prague's Rudolfinum. We've been collaborating with Filmharmonie for several years and have experienced their concerts firsthand – just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. Don't hesitate and try it yourself!

Press release: Filmová filharmonie is launching its eleventh concert season with the flagship of its thematic repertoire. Star Wars, Star Trek, Interstellar, or Alien – the SCI-FI concert offers a mix of classic literature and repertoire novelties that aren't commonly heard on our concert stages. October 8th at Prague's Rudolfinum.

In its eleventh concert season, Filmharmonie welcomes its listeners with the popular SCI-FI concert. Alongside the Fantasy thematic program, it represents one of the orchestra's most popular repertoire programs, and Filmová filharmonie will perform it on the Rudolfinum stage for the fifth time since its inception. As always, the concert's dramaturgy brings both timeless sci-fi classics and repertoire novelties.

Among the novelties on the concert program, one cannot overlook the monumental theme from the movie Interstellar, penned by Hans Zimmer. Its escalating organ theme, resonating alongside a large symphony orchestra in the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum, will be a unique experience. For the first time, Filmharmonie will also perform the theme from the adventure sci-fi Rocketeer, which represents the classic signature of the beloved composer James Horner in the program. Listeners will be able to enjoy unusual orchestral work and a distinctive approach to sci-fi music in Morricone's soundtrack for the film Mission to Mars.

On the other hand, popular program staples will not be missing, including the punchy suite from the film Star Trek Into Darkness, the adventurous melodies from Predator built on the sound of ethnic percussion instruments, the epic theme from the film Inception, and one of the greatest film music classics of all time in the form of Star Wars IV: A New Hope by John Williams.

"The sci-fi music genre offers a wide palette of sounds and musical instruments," describes the orchestra's director and dramaturg Matěj Lehár. "That is why the orchestra's composition plays a major role in building the quality of Filmová filharmonie's concerts. Providing an authentic experience to our listeners is one of our key values." During a single evening, listeners will be able to witness monumental organs, electric guitars, recorders and ocarinas, or ethnic percussion instruments alongside a large symphony orchestra.

Successful conductor and solo horn player of the Czech Philharmonic, Ondřej Vrabec, will present himself from the conductor's podium for the second time. Fans of Filmharmonie concerts will certainly not be surprised by the name of concertmaster David Pokorný, whose performance of solo violin melodies they will be able to enjoy. The intergalactic atmosphere will be complemented for visitors upon entering the Rudolfinum foyer by cosplayers, led this time by a group of terrifyingly authentic Predators.
